Q: I have received the Vajrabhairava (Yamantaka) Initiation some time ago. I live hundreds of miles from the next Dharma center and my work schedule does not allow me to attend any teachings or practice groups that are that far away. Any suggestions on how can I get started with my practice?

A: This is a situation a lot of practitioners find themselves in. If you don't live close to a major metropolitan area it's hard to find any support for your practice be it in form of a teacher or a sangha practicing Vajrabhairava. Here are some suggestions:

Ideally you'd start out with commentary teachings or a practice retreat. In the course of these events you'd normally go through every step of the practice and every word of the sadhana. A number of Gelugpa centers around the world offer such teachings in regular intervals. Look up a center most convenient to you at www.fpmt.org.

The truth is that most practitioners don't have much of a choice. Neither do they have a teacher nor a supporting sangha. When I say "teacher" I don't mean the lama who gave the empowerment but a real teacher with whom you have a personal relationship. A teacher who knows you, your personal situation, your needs, and responds to you on a an individual basis. "Sangha" in this context is understood in a similar, personal way.

In most cases you'd have to take matters in your own hands. Probably the best way would be to sign up with a distance learning course like the one offered by the Chenrezig Institute in Queensland, Australia. The next best thing would be the careful study of one of the Yamantaka books listed on our site. We strongly recommend Geshe Loden's book Ocean of Indivisible Method and Wisdom, followed by Gehlek Rinpoche's Yamantaka Teachings (which are a lot more extensive) and go through it step by step.
